The Friends of Hoddles Creek group was formed in 1999 and consists of concerned residents of Hoddles Creek and adjacent areas, who want to ensure that the special balance of Hoddles Creek is maintained for future generations.
We have several main objectives
• a community and school education role about the importance of native forests and waterways in providing a wildlife habitat and the need to balance this heritage against development activities
• a watching brief over development projects to ensure that regulations related to tree clearing, maintenance of wildlife corridors, water usage from local waterways and use of chemical sprays are adhered to
• a lobbying role with local and state bodies to ensure that environmental concerns are strongly represented in any planning or development activities
• a ‘hands on’ role in weed control, rubbish removal, regeneration and maintenance of bushland areas, especially along local waterways
• documentation of local wildlife populations

About some of the work that the Friends of Minak REserve have been engaged with.
Darcy Duggan, the coordinator of the Friends of Minak Reserve.
Some of this work has included the restoration of a highly weed invaded site to the north of Minak Reserve. Part of the site was a degraded section of Damp Forest, which was a mass of blackberry three metres high under the forest canopy. This had been sprayed with Garlon, which had successfully killed it, but then a highly flammable mass of Wire Grass Tetrarrhena juncea two metres high grew, causing concern to the local fire officer.
Darcy says that following up on new blackberry seeding, and just by“scuffing around” he managed to set the Wire Grass back, and subsequently ground-ferns started to emerge. After keeping the weed control up tree ferns werestarting to recolonise.
Further north some gullies which were full of mats of Wandering Creeper *Tradescantia fluminensis had been gradually restored by raking the Wandering Creeper down into the gully in stages, and allowing recolonisation by indigenous plants. Follow-up handweeding had clearly been necessary. Re-colonisation of the gully by tree ferns was being hastened by planting Soft Tree Ferns Dicksonia antarctica rescued from gardens being destroyed by renovations.
Darcy notes that the Rough Tree Ferns Cyathea australis which were recovering on their own, could not be transplanted in this way.
The northerly extent - the edge of the Dandenong Ranges National Park, has weed-infested and nutrient-laden drainage water causing a wedge of weed infestation deeply running into the park, and very poor mowing practices for a fire-break on the edge of the park were converting the native understorey of the Wet Forest EVC to weed-scapes.
Activities:
Restoring and maintaining indigenous vegetation and protecting wildlife at Picnic Hill Bushland Reserve.
Removing environmental weeds and checking nest boxes

Sassafras Creek’s pure fresh spring water flows in its natural state through Kallista, Monbulk and onwards to Woori Yallock Creek.
Surrounding the creek is a spectacular forest , forming a linear corridor encompassing valuable flora and fauna.
The Sassafras Creek Reserve holds many treasures: lush fern gullies, the endangered Slender Tree Fern, mosses, lichen, fungi, aromatic Sassafras trees, towering Mountain Ash and delicate ground covers.
Home to a diversity of fauna, Superb Lyrebirds, Freshwater Crays, Blackfish, Feathertail Gliders, Dusky Antichinus and several owl species – to name a few.
Walking the Sassafras Creek track allows you to experience the beauty and serenity of our natural environment.
The goal of the ‘Friends of Sassafras Creek’ is to maintain and preserve the natural state of the Sassafras Creek Reserve.
But...
Environmental weeds are invading, smothering the natural vegetation and degrading its habitat, and litter and waste water coming from the road drains are causing erosion. The Sassafras Creek Reserve is too precious to let this happen!

HEWI is a community voice acting to protect and conserve important elements of our local environment. Healesville Heritage Watch was established in 1989 in response to community concerns for the local environment. In 1996, the name was changed to Healesville Environment Watch Inc. to reflect the change of focus needed to respond to complex government planning procedures that are threatening local environments. HEWI has a large collection of information about local and general environmental issues that we can share. We can also provide information on correct procedures and appropriate contacts within the Shire regarding environmental issues. Join us on community planting days to restore our local native vegetation. These days are a great way to get yourself and your family involved in improving your local environment and reconnecting yourself with nature. We act as a community voice for sustainable development within the Shire by reviewing planning submissions, advising on local governance, attending relevant Council meetings and appearing before hearings as required. Occasional guided walks through areas native vegetation to identify and record occurrences of rare and endangered plant species. No previous experience is required to join these fun and educational outings. Community Planting Days to revegetate the Don Road Creek in Queens ParkOur Role

Montrose Environmental Group was formed in 1971 by a group of local residents who wanted to preserve the special character and features of the Montrose community. Since then the group has been active in preserving and protecting the community of Montrose and neighbouring localities such as Kalorama and Kilsyth South.
Today the group organises a number of locally based activities that provide practical environmentalism. Recent highlights include:
We believe in the importance of local action to support global issues. Our group is practically oriented and we welcome participation in meetings and events.

Mt Evelyn Environment Protection and Progress Association (MEEPPA) started in 1909 as the Mt Evelyn Progress Association. Previously it was known as the Evelyn Progress Association.
Since then MEEPPA has grown and turned its focus towards looking after the environment as well as helping Mt Evelyn progress.
We have continuously monitored, promoted and protected the unique water resources that form part of our beautiful environment. We have
continued to seek improvements to the use of Olinda Creek for nearly a century – and our work is not finished yet.
We appreciate and protect our rich Flora and Fauna seek to educate the wider community in our efforts.
Mount Evelyn is the home of the Powerful Owl and we are the Custodians of the ‘Owl Land Reserve’ to the north of the town, one of only two to be set aside exclusively for owls in the world (to this date). We administer this in partnership with Local Government as well as seeking Corporate Sponsorship such as SP Ausnet and Johnson Tiles.
We represent residents, where possible, on standing committees, initiated by the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
We are a non sectarian, non aligned and fully independent Association with membership open to anyone who agrees to abide by the articles of the association.

Yarra Valley Tree Group has been operating since 1989, and is a diverse group of volunteers who are committed to working with local landholders and authorities responsible for public lands, to revegetate with indigenous plants of local provenance, particularly along waterways.
Planting is mainly concentrated in the Yarra River catchment between Yering Gorge which is downstream of Yarra Glen, and Healesville.
In recent years we have carried out numerous plantings along the banks of Steels Creek, Dixons Creek, Stringybark Creek, Badger Creek and the Yarra River as part of the Stream Frontage Management Program/Healthy Waterways Scheme.
We have been heavily involved in ensuring the survival of Eucalyptus yarraensis (Yarra Gum), which is of state botanical significance because of its rarity, with plantings at many sites within its natural habitat.
We have also been involved in revegetating the National Trust classified and Trust for Nature protected Eucalyptus crenulata (Buxton Gum) site on the Yarra floodplain at Yering.
As part of the lead up to the Sydney Olympics we held an Olympic Landcare 2000 planting beside Maroondah Hwy at Coldstream, which was part of the torch relay route.
